Dr Kayman received a BS degree in Food and Nutrition from Cornell University, an MS in Nutrition Science and Public Health from Columbia University, Teachers’ College, and a DrPH in Public Health Nutrition from UC Berkeley.  Her dissertation research focused on the behavioral differences between women who were able to maintain weight losses and those who regained weight, in an effort to understand the processes of weight loss and regain.  Please see article posted at http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/reprint/52/5/800.pdf

She completed an NIH - NHLBI cardiovascular disease prevention postdoctoral research fellowship at Stanford’s Center for Research in Disease Prevention, working on the Stanford Weight Control and Health Improvement Studies,  before working for 10 years as the Program Director for the weight management and cardiovascular programs for Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California Region, where she oversaw care management program development, maintenance, and refinement,  facilitated work groups and task forces, trained health professionals, and developed, implemented, and evaluated program curricula.

Prior to returning to the Bay Area last summer, Dr Kayman and her husband spent 6 years in South Carolina, working to address significant health disparities in that state.  She was the Deputy Director for the Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities, and a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Education and Behavior at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health.  She chaired the School Nutrition Task Force for the South Carolina Department of Education, that developed the guidelines that were incorporated into the state’s new school wellness legislation. She also chaired the Community Nutrition and Physical Activity Taskforce for the CDC funded, Obesity Prevention effort of the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control to develop the goals, objectives and action plans for the state’s obesity prevention plan.

Dr Kayman has also worked as a home economist (at a Chicago Co-op Supermarket), as a Public Health Nutritionist (in Health Departments in New York City and in Contra Costa County), and as a Field Program Supervisor and Lecturer in Public Health Nutrition at UC Berkeley,  before beginning her doctoral studies.  Dr Kayman currently serves as Secretary-Elect and a Section Councilor for the American Public Health Association’s Food and Nutrition Section, and is working to help increase the representation of physical activity professionals in the APHA, and on addressing the public health nutrition workforce shortage.

Dr Kayman has 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren in Los Angeles and San Diego.
